How to Choose Boxing Headgear: Open-Face vs Full-Face Bar

von Havoc Boxing Team 25 Aug 2026

Headgear is the piece of sparring equipment people think about least and benefit from most. But walk into a gym and you'll see two very different styles on the racks — open-face and full-face bar — and they protect you in genuinely different ways. Here's how to pick the right one.

What Boxing Headgear Actually Protects

Let's be clear about one thing first: headgear does not prevent concussions. No headgear does. What it genuinely protects against is surface damage — cuts, scrapes, swelling, broken noses, and cauliflower ear. That's still hugely valuable if you spar regularly, but it's important to understand what you're actually buying.

Open-Face (Cheek Protector) Headgear

The most common style in most gyms. It protects the forehead, temples, ears, and cheeks while leaving the face itself open.

  • Best for: Technical sparring, competition prep, most day-to-day gym work
  • Pros: Excellent visibility, better airflow, lighter on the head, allows you to practice realistic head movement and slipping
  • Cons: Nose and mouth are exposed — nosebleeds and split lips still happen

Full-Face Bar Headgear

Adds a padded bar across the face, covering the nose and mouth area. Common among fighters returning from injury or those who simply can't afford facial damage.

  • Best for: Heavy sparring, protecting an existing injury, fighters who need to protect their face for work or personal reasons
  • Pros: Dramatically reduces nose and mouth injuries, lets you spar hard with more confidence
  • Cons: Slightly restricted peripheral vision, warmer, and it can create false confidence — some boxers stop moving their head because they feel protected

Getting the Fit Right

A poorly fitted headgear is worse than none at all — if it shifts during a round and blocks your vision, that's genuinely dangerous. Look for:

  • Snug but not tight: It shouldn't move when you shake your head vigorously
  • Clear sightlines: You should see your own hands in your peripheral vision without tilting your head
  • Adjustable straps: Top, rear, and chin adjustment lets you dial in the fit as padding compresses over time
  • Room for a mouthguard: Try it on with your mouthguard in — the jaw position changes the fit

Sizing

Most quality headgear runs S through XL based on head circumference. Measure around your head just above the eyebrows and check against the manufacturer's chart. When you're between sizes, size up — straps can tighten a slightly large piece, but nothing fixes one that's too small.

Why Leather Matters Here Too

Just like gloves, genuine leather headgear molds to your head shape over time and holds its protective padding density far longer than synthetic alternatives. Given that headgear sits directly against your skin and absorbs a lot of sweat, the material quality also affects how long it lasts before it starts breaking down.
