Lace-Up vs Velcro Boxing Gloves: Which Should You Buy?

by Havoc Boxing Team 20 Aug 2026

Walk into any boxing gym and you'll see both closures on the wraps of the fighters around you: laces and velcro. Neither one is objectively "better" — they're built for different priorities. Here's how to decide which one actually fits how you train.

Lace-Up Gloves: Maximum Wrist Support

Lace-up gloves wrap and tighten around the wrist with a traditional shoelace-style closure, giving you a fully customizable, locked-in fit. Because the lacing distributes pressure evenly around the entire wrist rather than at a single velcro strap point, lace-ups generally offer the most secure, supportive fit available — which is exactly why they're mandatory in professional and most amateur competition.

Pros

  • Superior wrist stability and support, especially for heavy bag work and hard sparring
  • Fully adjustable fit — you control exactly how tight each layer is
  • The standard for competition; required in most sanctioned bouts

Cons

  • You need a training partner (or patience) to tie them properly
  • Slower to put on and take off between rounds or exercises
  • Not ideal if you're training solo

Velcro (Hook-and-Loop) Gloves: Speed and Convenience

Hook-and-loop gloves use a wide velcro strap across the wrist, letting you get in and out of your gloves in seconds without help. Quality varies more here than with laces — a well-built velcro glove from a brand like Winning or Cleto Reyes still offers excellent wrist support, just distributed differently than a lace-up.

Pros

  • On and off in seconds, no assistance needed
  • Great for solo training, circuit work, or switching between drills quickly
  • Easier for beginners still learning proper glove fit

Cons

  • Slightly less precise, customizable fit than a well-tied lace-up
  • Not permitted in most competitive bouts
  • Straps can wear out over years of heavy use

Which Should You Choose?

If you... Choose
Train with a partner or coach regularly Lace-up
Compete or plan to compete Lace-up
Train solo most of the time Velcro
Switch gloves between multiple training partners at a gym Velcro
Want maximum wrist protection for heavy sparring Lace-up

Many serious boxers actually own both: velcro for solo bag work and pad drills, lace-up for sparring days when a coach or partner can help tie them.
